You’ve probably heard of the composer Georg Freidrich Haendl. But did you know there was a Slovenian Haendl, and that he was also a composer? It’s true. And the Slovenian Handl came first. He was a Renaissance composer named Jacobus Gallus Carniolus, also known as Jacobus Handl, Jacobus Händl, Jacobus Gallus and even Jacobus Petelin. If you’re good with languages, you’ve probably figured out what all those surnames have in common: they mean rooster. Gallus, Handl and Petelin are the Latin, German and Slovene versions of the word.
Fittingly, Gallus wrote madrigals in Latin and German. And his works are still performed to this day.
